Subject: Reso 452 AWESC ... comments due today related to composting on Big Island
Aloha from an off-island friend and frequent visitor to the Big Island,
As a person that loves your island, and as a career professional in the waste management industry, I am writing
today to support Resolution 452 to step away from the current waste RFP process. I commend you on many
parts of your vision and process, but now that the RFP has been issued it is clear that it was written too narrowly
to allow the new and innovative systems which would lead your communities away from "waste" management
and towards the new industry called "resource management". This shift in perspective regarding "trash" is
sweeping communities across the world because it is cheaper, cleaner and more flexible than the old ways of
landfilling or incinerating our discarded resources. There is far more economic, social and environmental value in
recycling everything versus burying or burning it, and that truth is emerging ever-stronger on a daily basis in
many many places as I write this.
I appreciate the mayor's desire to move quickly -yes! - but not so fast that a serious and huge mistake is made
on your beautiful Big Island that will cost you money and lost opportunities for decades ahead.
The focus on composting in this Resolution is a key issue to understanding how Resource Management Systems
works compared to the old waste management industry. In addition, there are a few other issues within the RFP
that weren't done exactly right either which can be fixed by tweeking this process quickly and professionally so
that all the potential vendors offer you a local solution for the future and not cookie-cutter proposals from the
past that continue to destroy your local resources instead of conserving and expanding them.
