not surprising that most visitors prefer the open spaces and natural areas ofthe -Big Island ,}
to the over- developed and crowded Honolulu It behooves us to keep our islan
becoming over - developed_
There is discussion whether our shore - line setback should be 20 or 40 feet I
suggest that it should be 500 feet. The land along the coast is perhaps the most beautiful
part of our island and should not be destroyed by building on it_ Also, the quality of our
coastal waters is dependent on keeping runoff from the land to a minimum This 500 foot
buffer zone should be kept vegetated where possible to protect the ocean from runoff
Also, there should be no septic systems in this 500 foot buffer zone Otherwise, there is
too little soil to keep the effluent from t6. ocean
New Jersey has a 300 foot buffer zone to keep septic systems away from streams,
rivers and the ocean_ Hawaii has so much more to protect_ Florida has recently
discovered large areas of coastal waters that are contaminated with viruses, probably from
septic systems built too close to the water The states bordering the Chesapeake Bay are
working to implement vegetated buffer zones along the Bay and all streams leading into
the Bay. That is the only way to keep silt from washing into the Bay.
Our coral reef have already been impacted by the silt that washes into the sea
This 500 foot buffer zone will help give the coral a chance to recover.
I hope that this island will create a meaningful shore -line setback and be an
example for the State to follow.
