Dear Chairman Arakaki and members of the Hawaii County Council:
RE: Resolution 328 -98
My name is Tony Hanley and I am President of the Big Island Business
Council speaking today in support of Reso 328 -98.
The Big Island Business Council is composed of 11 business organizations
from around our island representing over 5,000 working men and women.
While our organization has not addressed the issue of marijuana and most
likely will not take a position as to its future legality, we as business
people strongly support the efforts of our County Police Department and
their efforts to combat the growing, harvesting, distribution, and use of
this illegal substance.
Even if you personally believe that marijuana should be legalized,
abolishing the eradication program of our police department is not the
avenue you should follow to overturn these laws. Do not play into the
hands of those who would continue to grow and sell marijuana, and those
who would urge you to take the first step toward legalization by tying
the hands of those who are required to enforce the law.
I urge the Council to continue to accept Federal Funding for our police
department's marijuana eradication program. Do not hamstring our law
enforcement's efforts to enforce state and federal marijuana laws.
