Re: Resolution 328 -98 Statewide Marijuana Eradication Grant(FEd).
Dear Mr. Arakaki and fellow County Council People,
My name is Joslyn Tamura and is the current President of the
Lehua Jaycees. We represent over 150 members in our organization.
We are a young persons leadership organization, offering training
and projects, while assisting our community.
The Lehua Jaycees fully support Resolution 328 -98, which
authorizes the County of Hawaii to enter into an agreement with
the United States of America for a statewide Marijuana eradication
grant.
Our organization does many different projects for and within
our Hilo community. The children of our community are one
important factor.
In 1998, we have conducted two worthwhile projects. The first
was a Teen Dance held at the Butler Building. It was put together
with the Hawaii Community Policing and the Hawaii Alliance of
Public Nursing. This event was billed as and Alcohol, Smoke,
Drug and Gang Free. We had almost 200 students attend this dance.
The second project, which we met with the same groups as well
as representatives of students, was a beach day, dance at Coconut
Island. We had overwhelming support from our community and local
businesses. From donated food and juice, snacks, canoes, local
bands and numerous prizes, we were able to provide a safe
environment for our youngsters. Although the weather was foul,
we had over 30 students attend in the rain and wind.
We look forward to working with these organizations again, to
help promote a drug, alcohol, smoke and gang free environment.
