In the matter of the mandatory study of marijuana eradication
program in the County of Hawaii:
I am a twenty -year resident of Ka'u who is currently President of Naalehu Main
Street. I respectfully urge the County to submit the ongoing marijuana
eradication program to careful and thorough studies as required by law because
numerous unintended consequences have resulted from this program that need
to be weighed against the benefits,
Three problems that have roots in the County eradication program immediately
come to my mind:
➢ It is very dangerous to human lives, especially the lives of the young men who
dangle from the cables under the helicopters. Lives have already been lost in
helicopter crashes and many more are at -risk as the numbers of helicopters
used appears to increase yearly.
➢ In the mid- 1980s, UHH Professor Jon Cauley explained in my economics
class that the eradication efforts would drive up cost and cause people to
substitute other drugs. I have watched this happen in Ka'u where we have an
on -going problem with heavy -duty drug dealers hanging out in the carport of
the old police station, which is now the Naalehu Main Street offices. As well,
the new drugs we are seeing used in our community are much more
destructive of minds and families.
➢ Persons who really need the medicinal properties of marijuana are being
legally denied this therapy.
