REQUEST FOR COUNTY CONSULTATION ON THE KALOKO-HONOKOHAU NATIONAL P2KD`
SERVICE PETITION TO DESIGNATE KEAUHOU AQUIFER SYSTEM AREA AS A GROUND'`J
WATER MANAGEMENT AREA
Dear Chairperson Aila,
The Department of Water Supply(DWS)wishes to inform you that we are in the process of conducting two
studies which should provide the Commission on Water Resource Management(CWRM)with valuable
information regarding the Keauhou Aquifer and CWRM's decision regarding the subject petition to designate.
The first study will gather updated information regarding drawdown and recovery rates of our six(6)high-level
aquifer wells, as well as concurrent observation of several nearby, down-gradient basal wells to determine
interrelation, if any.
The second study will be an update to two sections of the County of Hawai`i's Water Use and Development
Plan (WUDP), one of which involves the Keauhou Aquifer System. DWS recognizes that in light of the
petition, as well as a substantial amount of new available information, that an update is warranted at this time.
The first study will be a year-long assessment; however, we will provide CWRM with data as it becomes
available, prior to finalizing the study. However, the update to the WUDP is expected to extend beyond
December of this year.
Again, these studies will provide CWRM with current and relevant information regarding the Keauhou Aquifer,
and we respectfully ask for your consideration to utilize the information in the decision-making process.
Sinc rely yours,
I
