When the Alii Highway project was approved by the
Planning Commission, residents were told that the Planning and
Engineering Departments calculated that the future traffic in the
Keauhou to Kailua corridor needed a four lane divided highway.
This was supposedly based on the build out over the next twenty
years. The very next sub - division sent to the planning commission
was the Kahakai Project. While the lowered density of the project
is admirable, the deletion of access to the proposed Alii Highway
means that once more a 98 unit sub - division with no Mauka,
Makai connection will be allowed to move forward.
One month the county engineer tells of the impending
disaster if a divided highway is not built and the very next month
he sees no problem dumping the traffic from 98 units onto a two
lane highway with 45 M.P.H. speed limit. This will completely
by -pass the Alli Highway and impact the roads in Kailua that are
already at an impasse. The intersection of Lako & Kuakini
Highway and Palani Road are the two worst bottlenecks in town
and these aren't being addressed. Lets try to work out a
comprehensive plan for the Kailua Area with some roads running
in the right direction. That's Mauka, Makai
