It is difficult for me to understand how anyone associated with South Kona could
oppose this project except perhaps for the small businesses in Kainaliu, etc. (and the
argument that it would cut their business is largely spurious).
Since I use the road (against the flow) twice daily, I have a fairly good appreciation of
its problems.
The South Kona area is logically the place where most of the residential and diversified
agricultural growth for Kona wlll occur, particularly if the "north Ka'u" (Iiawaiiatt
Ocean View Estates, etc.) area is included, then it becomes the major dormitory for the
Kona workforce. Of course the Kalnaliu t~rridor area of the Mamalahoa Highway was
never designed for this massive incceaae in traffic and thus is totally inadequate.
So we have the artery providing access for a large part of Kona's goods, services and
people inadequate and incapable of being fixed along its present route. When you add
to the local traffic, the tourist FIT's and buses and you have the present mess.
While I appreciate there are some ocher road problems in Kona, this has been tong
recognized as the most ecitical, i.e., for over 30 years. Of course, rite people who use
this road would nocbe at a public meeting -they would have to use the road to get
there and besides Shg3C are employed and committed workers of the area. Q
For MacFarms, the costs of the inadequate road are significant but the problets extend ~ ~ J
way beyond a single company. J ,o
