Attn: Letters to Editor
re: Ali i Highway
Aloha dear Editor:
It is unfortunate that the two people whose letters were published in
WHT supporting the Ali'i Highway were not at the hearing the County
Council held on December 30.. They would have heard almost 100%
support of a new parkway traversing Kailua. just NOT the proposed four -
lane high -speed highway. with 14 foot walls along both sides of the road
as sound barriers. The proposed highway is totally out of character for
Kona and would block desperately needed mauka -makai roads.
It has been said that this current design is all that could be federally
funded. This may not be true as the federal government is wanting to be
open to community needs. The exploration of a redesign of a parkway
with a lower speed limit. nice landscaping. mauka -makai roads crossing
it. and paths for bikes and walkers is what is needed now.
My husband and I have lived on or within 1 1/2 blocks of Ali'i Drive for
several years. so we travel Ali'i Drive often. Seldom do we have to drive
slower than the speed limit. The construction projects caused massive
delays. but that is completed and the road is newly paved and striped
and it is still too narrow for safe biking. running and /or walking.
Alii Drive was built without planning for bikers. walkers and runners.
Now we have the choice to do so with a completely new road. Let's take
advantage of this possibility and encourage our Council Members and
planners to rethink what is needed and get that funded.
Sincerely.
