As a resident and property owner in`the immediate Alii Drive
area, I am writing to voice my concerns about the proposed Alii
Highway.
First of all, it seems prudent to reevaluate and update a
traffic study to best know how many lanes of traffic will be
needed. While it seems logical that the highway would improve
traffic flow, I am concerned that a four lane highway with noise
abatement walls would be a blight on the landscape.
I would like to see a tastefully planned and attractively
executed roadway with pedestrian and bicycle access, landscaping,
ample mauka -makai connecting roadways, and limitations on traffic
speed that would negate the requirement of walls on both sides of
the roadway to function as noise barriers.
We the people of Kona are not adverse to progress, but would
like to support thoughtful planning that improves the overall ap-
pearance as well as the function of our community. It would be
of significant benefit to have the proposed plans published in
West Hawaii Today so that we can separate fact from fiction in
educating ourselves about the proposed Alii Highway.
