Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred Bill No. 271,
reports as follows:
Bill No. 271, transmitted by Council Member Valerie Poindexter, via Communication No. 947 dated
June 30, 2014, amends Chapter 24, Article 10, Division 5, Section 24-281 of the Hawai`i County Code
1983 (2005 Edition, as amended) by removing `Ohai Street from Schedule 29 (parking prohibited during
certain hours on certain streets, tow-away zone), Subsection (c), South Hilo.
The purpose of this amendment is to remove parking restriction on `Ohai Street which was intended to
accommodate the street-sweeping operation by the Highway Maintenance Division. However, the
Highway Maintenance Division confirmed that such restriction is no longer needed.
`Ohai Street resident, Mr. Donald Medeiros, testified in support of the bill.
Council Member Valerie Poindexter, in response to Councilmember Ford's inquiry, confirmed that
DPW no longer performs street-sweeping on `Ohai Street.
Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Bill No. 271, and recommends its passage on first reading.
