Re: Operating Budget
The State of Hawai`i Department of Agriculture is providing $200,000 to the County of Hawai`i to
establish its Little Fire Ant (LFA) Control program. The LFA Control program's goal is to fight
the fire ant, an invasive species, at Department of Parks and Recreation facilities.
Enclosed is a resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the State of Hawai`i
Department Agriculture to allow the County to receive funds for this program. Also enclosed is a
bill for an ordinance amending the Operating Budget by appropriating $200,000 for these funds to
the Little Fire Ant Control program—Department of Agriculture account.

A. REQUEST:
Requesting a bill for an ordinance to create a revenue and expenditure account in the Park Maintenance
budget entitled "LFA Control-Dept of Ag" in the amount of$200,000.
Requesting a resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the State
Department of Agriculture to establish a Little Fire Ant Control program to fight the invasive species at
Department of Parks and Recreation facilities.
B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
In cooperation with the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture the County of Hawaii Department of Parks
and Recreation would like to establish a Little Fire Ant (LFA) control program for the departments facilities.
The State shall provide $200,000 in funding for the department to hire up to 3 staff and provide them the
equipment as well as the necessary bait. The staff will be tasked to identify infected areas and bait on a 6
week cycle.
