The scheduled Hilo Council Meeting
This is notification that I am sponsoring certificates of recognition. We will be
presenting these certificates at the scheduled August 6, 2014 Hawaii County Council
meeting to Kanu o ka Aina Charter School, Waimea School, Parker School, Hawaii
Preparatory School, Alo Kehau o ka Aina Mauna School and Punana Leo o Waimea
School for the Mele Mural painted on Kahilu Town Hall as a contribution to the
Community. We will need 20 minutes for our presentations.

KANU 0 KA AINA MELE MURAL
Kanu o ka'Aina New Century Public Charter School is the first school to do a'Mele Mural'which is a series of
murals intended to extend across all the islands with the goal to build and sustain a public art movement for
youth.The Kanu students also engaged the participation of a number of students from fellow Waimea schools:
Waimea Middle School,Parker School,Hawai'i Preparatory School,Alo Kehau o ka Aina Mauna School,and
Punana o Leo Waimea School.
The students were challenged in many ways,first being tasked with selecting the mele or songs and chants
that were to be depicted for the mural as well as conceptualizing the imagery. The mural focuses on our `
relationship with nature,with our ancestors,and with our vision of making a difference for future generations.
The next step was finding a space for the mural. Once the songs and walls were selected,and a proper
blessing was given,the paint party was on.
In one long week and late nights of painting the surface area totaling about 1,635 sq. ft.with approximately
200 haumana,kumu,and opio or community leaders and residents to envision,create and complete this
wonderful Mele Mural. The three Hawaiian Mele's chosen were"Mele Manaua," "Hole Waimea" and
"Na Pu'u Kaulana of Waimea" as well as illustrations from Hawaiian molelo's,or stories,from Waimea.
The huge success of the project was due to the basic ingredient we all need for success...
"Ha ele mai ka maua puu wai" or'Come from our Heart'.
To those involved,who have made a tremendous difference for our Island Ohana and on behalf of the Hawai'i
County Council,we extend our gratitude and appreciation with the hope that this community effort will be an
inspiration and serve as an example for others to embrace. .--
