Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication
'No . 2697, reports as follows :
The purpose of Communication No. 2697 is to request placement of
school crossing guards for Keonepoko Elementary School .
Communication No. 2697 is a copy of the letter to Chief of Police
Victor Vierra from Valerie Capellas, Principal, Keonepoko Elementary
School, dated July 17, 1991 . Therein she explains the school is
currently under construction in the Puna district, with a completion
date set for late August 1991 and instruction to begin on
September 3 , 1991. Anticipated enrollment is 400 students in
Kindergarten through Grade 3 .
Your Committee received testimony from the school principal during
its meeting and members discussed the possibility of contacting the
State Department of Transportation to request assistance with
placement of flashing lights on Kahakai Blvd. in the vicinity of the
school .
Your Committee on Finance recommends approval of the request for
providing school crossing guards for Keonepoko Elementary School and
requests the Police Chief appear before the County Council at its
meeting of August 21, 1991, to discuss its implementation.
