Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication
/No. 2660, reports as follows:
The purpose of Communication No. 2660 is to request Council approval
for the Fire Department to hire six (6) new fire fighter positions
one month earlier than budgeted in fiscal year 1991-1992 . The
advanced hiring would require ten months rather than nine months
funding.
The department has twenty (20) new fire fighter positions included
in the FY 91-92 budget of which fourteen (14) Ambulance Transfer
fire fighters have twelve-month funding and six (6) EMS Relief fire
fighters have nine months funding.
Your Committee was informed the Fire Department intends to delay
hiring for one month or more those positions funded for twelve
months in order to save enough funds to hire the remaining six (6)
positions one month in advance. By doing this, all new positions
will be consolidated into a single ten-week recruit training class .
This in turn will help with scheduling of EMT training and staff
duties .
The department estimates the proposed delay hiring will produce a
net excess of $4 , 150 .
Your Committee on Finance agrees with the intent and purpose of the
proposal as stated in Communication No. 2660 and recommends Council
approval . `"'
