Dear Councilman Yagong,
Charlie Candy, a long -time bicycle and pedestrian advocate, will be on our
island from February 1' - 7' following a seminar he is presenting on Oahu. Due to
his long association with PATH, he has offered his services to us, gratis. This is an
opportunity we think is too good to miss, and are requesting time during your
Committee on Public Works and Parks meeting on February 2' for a short
presentation on bike and pedestrian issues.
Charlie is known as the Johnny Appleseed of bicycling and walking in
America. He has help foster and advise more than 200 citizen -lead bicycle and
pedestrian advocacy groups across the nation. In September, 1998 he was named
by Velo Business as "America's #1 Bike Advocate ".
As a political leader, he was a member of the Texas House of
Representatives starting at age 23. He passed several pieces of legislation including
the well known and popular Texas Child Safety Seat Bill.
As a writer, Charlie has published numerous articles on management,
leadership, change, fundraising, sales strategies and political effectiveness. He has
lead seminars and taught training sessions on these topics from Hawaii to Maine,
including a Community Visioning Workshop for Waimea Trails and Creenways in
April 1994.
As a community activist, Charlie has been appointed to citizen advisory
boards, led task forces to address specific issues and organized campaigns for
various initiatives. He has served on local, state and national non - profit
Boards of Directors and led numerous fundraising campaigns.
As you can see this man has a lot to offer, and I hope that you can
