I would like to invite you to the Hawaii County Council's Governmental Relations and
Economic Development Committee meeting August 5 in the Hilo Council Chambers,
tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m.
In past meetings, council members have mentioned that they would like to have a
dialogue with you and the other Hawaii Island legislators before the start of the next
legislative session.
Here are the topics that we would like to discuss with you:
How do you feel about a proposal to give the counties the authority to add a
surcharge to the general excise tax of up to 1 percent as was proposed in House
Bill 1606 and Senate Bill 2115?
If the counties do not have the revenue to balance their budgets, would you
support 1) raising property taxes; or 2) increasing the counties' share of the TAT?
What is the percentage of the TAT revenue that you would feel comfortable
giving to the counties?
Would you have any suggestions on how we can build a better relationship
between the State and the counties?
