Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred Resolution
No. 467-14, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 467-14, transmitted by Public Works Director Warren H. W. Lee, via
Communication No. 943 dated June 23, 2014, grants a variance from Chapter 3, Section 3-58(c),
and 3-59(a)(4), Hawai`i County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), to allow three wall signs
on 75-934 Henry Street, Tax Map Key: 7-5-004:031 (Zoned"U" CG-20, Kailua Village Special
Design District).
The applicant, Scanlan Management LLC, requests a variance from Hawai`i County Code
Chapter 3, Signs, to construct three signs at the Jack in the Box location on Henry Street in
Kona.
Scanlan Managament LLC representative Mark Lo stated that an existing retaining wall on
Alahou Street impedes the visibility of the sign if they follow the standard measurements as
required by the code. The request for the 20-foot sign variance is to make sure that the sign is
visible to the public travelling on Alahou Street.
The request received a favorable recommendation from the Kailua Village Design Commission.
Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose
and intent of Resolution No. 467-14, and recommends its adoption.
