HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0115.002 1998-2000 To: Julie Jacobson and all Council Members Re: Phase 2 Cooper Center Covered Court From: Betsy Mitchell, President Cooper Center Council On behalf of all of us at Volcano we would like to thank you Council members who made it possible for the first phase of our Covered Court to move ahead. It has at last gone out to bid and the Lord willing, construction will be under way in the very neaz future which will make a great number of Volcano Residents of all ages very happy indeed. The original plan was for everything to go out to bid at the same time.-The covered athletic court, the store room, the bathrooms plus, and to the immense relief of ever so many of us from Keaau to Naalehu, the POLICE SUBSTATION. Unfortunately the decision was made to divide the project into 2 phases. The first phase consists of simply the covered court itself-no storage, no bathrooms and no police substation.. These three items aze in phase 2 before you today as an addition to the CIP which all of us in Volcano strongly urge you to approve. We of course need the store room in order to secure the equipment required for the use of the Covered Court. The need for bathrooms to be closer than 2 city blocks from the facility can be very easily understood. And as for the Police Substation, everyone knows how necessary this is. It's a long distance between Keaau and Naalehu. A substation midway at Volcano would be a godsend. Lastly let me take a minute to bring you up to date on the activities taking place at this heavily used Center. There isn't a day of the week that at least 4 activities don't take place during the day and evening. From wellness programs, Senior activities, free tutoring for those in need from K through 12, classes of all kinds, AA, Alanon, quilting groups, community meetings on emergency Gaze for the azea in case of another serious earthquake (Cooper Center is an approved evacuation site), Y2K meetings to see that we're prepazed just in case and of course the very heavily attended weekly farmers mazket on Sunday to name a few. We are so busy as a matter of fact, that we MUST add on to the original Cooper Center building. Plans have been drawn, money raised to buy the material and best of all an impressive list of carpenters and contractors have signed up as VOLUNTEERS to do the work. We're a very active community who aze more than willing to do things ourselves, and do, but I must admit that the best thing that ever happened to us has been the partnership established between the County Parks and Recreation Dept and Cooper Center. I retiaember weal how helpful and encouraging Aaron Chun was as we began delving into the coecept. FEB 3 Isss To: Julie Jacobson and all Council Members Re: Approval of the appointment of John Santangelo to the County Charter Commission From: Betsy Mitchell I have worked closely with John Santangelo over the past two years, and feel that he would be an excellent addition to the County Charter Commission. He listens carefully to the feelings and ideas of others and goes out of his way to obtain all the information possible upon which to base his decisions. Most importantly he gets along well with people and gets the job done. Please do our Island a favor and approve John for this Commission. Thank you.
