Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 1000, reports as follows:
Communication No. 1000,transmitted by Mayor William P. Kenoi, dated August 21, 2014, requests review
and confirmation of the nomination of Mr. Melvin Ventura to the Tax Board of Review.
A lifelong resident of Hawai`i, Mr. Ventura has been employed by the Hawai`i Community Federal Credit
Union for the last 20 years, and is currently the Executive Vice President.
Mr. Ventura is a past member and president of the Rotary Club of Kona Mauka. He has also been a member
of the Kona Jaycees and the Hualalai Academy Advisory Group. Mr. Ventura states that he is not affiliated
with any political party. If confirmed, he will serve a term to end on December 31, 2018.
Deputy Planning Director Robert Command came before the Finance Committee and provided background
information, expressed the Mayor's support, and requested Council's favorable action of this appointment.
Mr. Ventura appeared before the Finance Committee for questions. When asked if he'd like to say some
words, he gave no comment.
Council Members Ilagan and Ford expressed support of Mr. Ventura's appointment.
Chair Poindexter informed Mr. Ventura that he did not need to appear before the full Council for
confirmation.
Pursuant to Section 19-96, Hawai`i County Code, there shall be a Tax Board of Review for the County,
consisting of five members, appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the council.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication No. 1000, and
recommends confirmation of the appointment of Mr. Melvin Ventura to the County of Hawai`i Tax Board of
Review.
