REQUEST: Prepare a resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement and accept a grant from the State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation. B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): The State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation has approved a $12,560.00 to the County of Hawaii Fire Department's Child Restraint Program through the Highway Safety Grant for Federal Fiscal Year 2015. The grant will be used for personnel costs for certified technicians to conduct inspection clinics and travel costs for personnel to attend the Statewide CPS Conference on Oahu and the National Conference on Highway Safety Priorities Lifesavers Conference in Chicago, Illinois. The goal of the program is to reduce injuries and deaths of children involved in motor vehicle crashes by increasing the overall and correct use of child safety seats. With proper instruction and increase use, the program hopes to reduce the incidences of unrestrained children involved in motor vehicle crashes. Studies show 46% of children ages 14 and under who died in vehicle crashes were found to have been completely unrestrained.
