Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred Resolution No. 553-14,
reports as follows:
Resolution No. 553-14, transmitted by Public Works Director Warren H.W. Lee, via Communication
No. 1082 dated September 10, 2014, grants a variance from Chapter 3, Section 3-58 (c), Hawaii
County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), to allow one wall sign on 75-146 Sarona Road,
Tax Map Key: 7-5-007:009 (Zoned "U" CG -20, Kailua Village Special Design District).
The owner of the property, Kona Hospitality, LLC, is requesting a sign variance for a wall sign to be
placed on the building at approximately nine feet above the second floor finish level along Sarona Road
frontage. The proposed wall sign is 12 square feet in area and includes an "H" symbol which will be no
more than 21 inches taller than the code limitation of 9 inches.
Mr. Kern confirmed Public Works Plan Examining Manager Neil Erickson's statement that the
requested variance only applies to the "H" symbol which is no more than 21 inches taller than the code
limitation and that the overall signage is in compliance with the code. He further noted that the words
"Holiday Inn Express & Suites" are each measured nine inches separately, which is also in compliance
with the code.
Resolution No. 553-14 was amended to Draft 2 with the contents of Communication 1082. 1, which
corrects the number of signs from three wall signs to one wall sign and other grammatical errors.
Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Resolution No. 553-14, as amended to Draft 2, and recommends its adoption.
