BOX 2360 HONOLULU,HAWAII 96804 OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT July 28, 2014 The Honorable Brenda Ford Council Member—District 6 Hawaii City Council 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 96740 Dear Council Member Ford: Subject: Pahala Gym and Emergency Shelter In response to your inquiries regarding the naming of the gym and emergency shelter being built on the Ka'u High School campus in Pahala, I have asked the Facilities Development Branch to look into this situation. As a result, we have made the following determinations: 1. The Gym was designed and constructed using funds provided by the State. 2. The Gym is being constructed on land owned by, and under the operational control of the State. As a result, the Gym is considered a State Facility, and because it is operationally attached to the adjacent Department of Education School, the naming of the facility shall comply with the guidelines set forth in the Board of Education (BOE) Policy 6750 -Naming of Schools and School Facilities Policy(see attached). We thank you for your interest in naming the gym and emergency shelter and suggest that you work with the Ka'u High and Pahala Elementary School community council in this endeavor.
