I wish to express my opposition to this bill.
The applicants, one of them a county division chief, lied to the county when they applied for and received a permit to
build a residence in the area to be rezoned and then built a commercial building instead.
They have made the county Public Works Division employees who had any part in the permit approval and inspection
process look like fools for not noticing that a residence was not being built, or worse yet, looking the other way giving
rise to speculation of both incompetence and corruption.
This company should not be rewarded for its deceit and the rezoning should be denied.
However, it would be a shame to waste a steel framed dwelling. By all means let them rent it out as a single family
residence which the permit allowed -- perhaps to someone who collects antique cars. There would be plenty of room in
the 5,996 square foot garage.
Better yet, it could be used as a neighborhood hurricane shelter if it was built to code - -but I guess we can't count on
that.
Councilmembers, please do not pass this bill. Doing so will undermine even more the public's trust and confidence in
county government - - -and in you.
