Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred Resolution No. 552-14,
reports as follows:
Resolution No. 552-14, transmitted by Public Works Director Warren H. W. Lee, via Communication
No. 1081 dated September 11, 2014, grants a variance from Chapter 3, Section 3-12(a), Hawaii County
Code 1983(2005 Edition, as amended), to allow one ground sign on 48-5370 Honoka`a/Waipi`o Road, Tax
Map Key: 4-8-006:043 (zoned "A" Agricultural District).
At the meeting of October 14, 2014, Your Committee expressed concern that the sign is too large and voted
unanimously to postpone the measure to the November 6, 2014 meeting to allow the applicant to revise the
variance request.
At the meeting of November 6, 2014, the measure was again postponed for further discussion with the
applicant on the desired size of the sign.
Resolution No. 552-14 was amended with the contents of Communication No. 1081.2, which reflects the
change of the variance request, from no greater than 32 square feet to no greater than 18 square feet.
Mr. Larry Vitlag, representing the applicant, came forward to address members of Your Committee, and
stated that the sign is a lot more pleasant to the eye and asked Your Committee to support the variance
request to establish the sign. Council Member Poindexter stated that she met with the applicant and was
pleased that they hired a local graphic artist to create their design.
Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Resolution No. 552-14 as amended to Draft 2, and recommends its adoption.
