I have been a marine retailer in Montana for over 5 years and have some insight into Bill 318.
t have received shipments from a Kona fisherman, David Dart on several occasions and have
not experienced any DOA(dead on arrival) animals ever.
Furthermore, not once have any of the animals been packed in a gallon or more of water.
I can say without reservations that none of the animals exhibited any undue stress or bacterial
or parasitic outbreaks due to the current accepted practices of supplying enough water,
oxygen, and in some cases treatments to counter ammonia production generated by the
animals waste.
I do not know whether or not the animals have been "starved" prior to their shipment.
I would seriously doubt that has occurred as more than once David and I have talked about
different food he has fed prior to ship out.
However, if food has been restricted to not create a excess waste issue, I am in favor of that
practice being continued for the overall health of the animal during transit.
This bill unfortunately does not recognize or cite any scientific study that would warrant such
a drastic change from current best and proven practices.
It does however further cement the opponents of a sustainable aquarium fisheries agenda of
trying another angle to shut down the west Hawaii fishery.
I strongly support a defeat of this ill prepared and non scientific bill based on my
observations of fish conditions at the end of the supply chain.
