My message to the Committee:
Aloha Chair Wille and Committee Members,
I support Bill 318 protecting Hawaii's reef wildlife from harmful
aquarium trade starvation and insufficient water volume during
shipping.
As an ocean swimmer and free diver, I see over the years, less and
less fish around the Hawaiian shores. In the bays I swum regularly, I
become familiar with the fish, often I see over months, the same reef
fish at the very same spots. It's like you walk down the road you
live, you get to know your neighbors, as most people stay for years at
the same place. It seems to be with many reef fish species the same.
But then all of a sudden, the neighborhood is empty. Mr. Puffer Fish
at the corner of the boat ramp, does not puff up to greet me like
other days, at the first coral chunk, no yellow tang and also the two
parrot fish are not there. Little Nemo, that tucked under the next
coral usually also not here...? That's when I know, the aquarium
fishers sweept the bay empty once again... Fish belong in the ocean
and NOT in an aquarium! Why on earth, anyone would put fish in a
little tank is a mystery to me and I urge you to stop this cruel
practice. Please save these fish, our oceans and our planet - we
can't buy a new one, if it's gone...! Mahalo and Aloha, Nadine
Fischer
