Over one million reef animals every year —about one every 22 seconds -- are taken off Hawai'i reefs for sale for aquariums worldwide. Hawai'i is the third largest supplier of reef fish for out - of -state home aquariums. But thousands of captured reef animals die from being transported with no food and little water. And of those who survive transport, many die within a year. Then thousands more are taken off our reefs to replace them. Four out of five reef wildlife deaths in home aquariums are caused by trade practices. Before transport, fish are starved for several days, though they usually feed all day in the wild. They may be packed in only one quart of water for two days, though they can be stressed just by being in two quarts of water for ten minutes. More than one out of ten of these stressed fish die within two weeks in stores. Please stop these inhumane and environmentally destructive practices. Mahalo!
