Aloha Chair Wille and Committee Members,
I support Bill 318 protecting Hawaii's reef wildlife from harmful aquarium trade
starvation and insufficient water volume during shipping.
Anyone buying or sending items to the mainland knows the higher shipping &
handling cost for liquids. For example: a recent order of IV Solution cost
$100.20 ($56.00 + $44.20 Fed Ex 2day Air).
Serious Cruelty to Animals exists on this Island of Hawaii; and I praise anyone
trying to change this.

Bill 318: AMENDS CHAPTER 4, ARTICLE 1, SECTION 4 -1 AND ADDS A NEW
SECTION TO ARTICLE 4 OF THE HAWAII COUNTY CODE 1983 (2005
EDITION, AS AMENDED), RELATING TO TREATMENT OF AQUARIUM LIFE
Establishes provisions for the protection of marine life that is harvested with the
intent to sell for aquarium use. Protections include prohibiting withholding food
from aquarium life for more than 24 hours, requiring ample water supply when
transporting aquarium life, and prohibiting the transport of aquarium life in a
manner that is likely to cause injury or death. Any person violating these
provisions would be
subject to a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment of up to 30 days, or both.
This simple amendment does nothing to stop the trade, only insures the humane
treatment of animals. The increased cost of Hawaii's Aquarium reef fish will be
passed on to the Luxury consumer. Hawaii Reef Fish are not a necessity, but a
luxury item, and that consumer can afford.
To even be thinking of shipping animals without plentiful water and food is
something I would be ashamed of. If there is eternal justice .... do unto others as
you would have them do unto you.
