A RESOLUTION URGING THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION TO APPROVE THE APPLICATION OF HAWAIIAN AIRLINES
FOR ALLOCATION OF A NONSTOP ROUTE BETWEEN KONA, HAWAII, AND
TOKYO, JAPAN.
WHEREAS, Hawaiian Airlines, the largest airline in the State of Hawaii, has applied
for a nonstop route between Kona International Airport and Tokyo International Airport,
commonly known as Haneda Airport; and
WHEREAS, Kona has been without direct service from Japan since November 2010, yet
has more visitors from Japan than the 12 existing markets that currently provide nonstop service
to Tokyo; and
WHEREAS, Hawaiian Airlines' extensive neighbor island routes provide nonstop
service to many world-class destinations throughout Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, there is an established demand for a nonstop -service route between Kona
and Tokyo, and approval of the application will have positive economic impacts on Hawaii
Island and the State of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Hawaiian Airlines estimates that the new service will provide an additional
39,000 visitors to Kona each year, generating 1,151 new jobs, $65,000,000 in new direct
spending, and $117,000,000 in total new sales; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the
United States Department of Transportation is urged to approve the application of Hawaiian
Airlines for allocation of a nonstop route between Kona, Hawaii, and Tokyo, Japan.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be transmitted to Anthony
R. Foxx, Secretary of Transportation, United States Department of Transportation; the Honorable
Governor David Y. Ige; the Honorable Mayor William P. Kenoi; Mark B. Dunkerley, President
and Chief Executive Officer, Hawaiian Airlines; and Ann Botticelli, Senior Vice President,
Corporate Communications and Public Affairs, Hawaiian Airlines.
