With a deep commitment to the reforestation of the Kohala Watershed Gunner has been providing substantial contributions twice a year to the project from his Wood Shows hoping to see a change in the water quality of Pelekane Bay. His ongoing efforts and interests have raised more than 35k. In March of 2012, vandals stripped the bark off of seven trees at Anuenue Playground in Waimea Park. They took the bark off the whole trunk of the tree - in essence killing the trees. These koa trees were planted in 1994 and each tree was donated by a family in Waimea with a sign showing the location and donor of each tree. Gunner came up with the idea for Waimea Outdoor Circle, as landscapers for the park, to make bowls from the salvaged wood and sell them as a fundraiser for the Outdoor Circle. He posed the idea to the West Hawaii Wood turners group and about 20 wood turners committed to donating a carved bowl or other artwork for the fundraiser. As a result the WOC planted native ohia trees to replace the koa. trees. Gunner continues to donate his time and energy in many ways including as-the Chair of the South Kohala Traffic Safety Committee as an effective voice for the safe travels of District 9 residents. He credits his wife Elli with his success as his partner allowing hi m the time to do things outside their Harbor Gallery business. Gunner, your involvement in a long list of organizations and activities, your willingness to volunteer your, time and talents with the exceptional results you achieve are outstanding examples for others to follow. Gunner Mench demonstrates how individuals can make a difference by way of focused intent and perseverance. The Hawaii County Council extends its appreciation for a job well done and hopes that this community effort will be an inspiration and serve as an example for others to embrace. ..
