Honoli'i Beach Park and Hakalau Beach Park are two of the few surf and recreational spots on the
Hamakua Coast. Not long ago, crime, trash, and misuse threatened to destroy these treasured areas.
Beginning in 2003, a group of concerned surfers looked at the overgrown areas of Honoli'i Beach Park and
envisioned a park where residents and visitors could visit and enjoy, and where families could gather.
Keith Nehls, also known as Bradda Skibs, was one of those original volunteers.
You were taught from a young age about malama i ka `aina, a principle your kupuna passed down
through the generations. In 2006, you established Basic Image Inc. a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization that
helped with the physical transformation and improvement of both Honoli'i and Hakalau beach parks.
Today, Basic Image Inc. has formed partnerships with a variety of educational institutions, local groups,
and organizations to conduct improvement projects, and to share knowledge and traditional practices at the
parks. Since establishing Basic Image Inc., you have inspired hundreds of volunteers, created more green
spaces and leveraged donations into conservation benefits for our island. Your vision and leadership
continues to heal and transform the coastal parks and hearts of the people of Hawai `i.
On behalf of the Mayor and the Council of the County of Hawai `i, we extend to you our heartfelt
appreciation for your unselfish and extraordinary act of kindness.
