County Council Resolution no. 599 14 November 19, 2014
A grant to Micronesians United- Big Islands for reimbursement of expenses
related to Pacific Islander Youth Career Day
Testimony in Favor: Craig Severance, Supporting Member
This project arose from discussions between the Prosecutors Office and the
Board members of Micronesians United Big Island about ways to engage Pacific
Islander youth and encourage them to work toward career and college readiness
and taking the right path. Two interns from UHH worked with the prosecutors
office on planning for the youth career day. We planned for 80, and had over 130
high school students show up for the day. It was a high energy day, and what
made it work so well was the involvement of the Pacific Islander Student Center
on the UHH campus and over 90 college student volunteers. The volunteers
guided the High school students through the panels and programs and were role
models of "Navigating for Success". The keynote speaker was Dr. Wilfred Alik,
a Hilo based M.D from the Marshall Islands. The closing remarks were by Mitch
Roth. The day was an overwhelming success, and we are planning a similar
event for next year.
Micronesians United Big Island matched a small grant from the prosecutor's
office, and the Pacific Islander Student Center covered their own expenses from a
federal grant to UHH.
