RESOLUTION NO. 106 15
RESOLUTION CREATING TWO (2) POLICE OFFICER II POSITIONS FOR
THE HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT
WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented
Policing Services (COPS) has authorized funding for a COPS Grant to the Hawai'i
County Police Department; and
WHEREAS, the grant provides partial funding of the salaries of two (2) new
police officers under the Police Department's COPS Hiring Program for 3 years; and
WHEREAS, at the conclusion of the grant period, the County will be required to
retain the positions and fund them; and
WHEREAS, these officers will be part of the Department's overall Community
Policing program, with one (1) position to be based at the Waimea Middle School and
one (1) position to be based at the Kea'au Middle School; and
WHEREAS, Article V, Section 5-1.3(c) of the Hawaii County Charter states that
the Mayor has the power to "Create positions—for which appropriations have been
made by the council..."; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that two
(2) Police Officer II PO -07, positions be created in the Hawaii County Police
Department, under the terms of the COPS Hiring Program.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that funds are available through the U.S.
Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services' COPS Grant.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED at the conclusion of the grant period, the County
will be required to retain the positions and fund it.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the
Departments of Finance, Human Resources, and Police.
