I do not support the appeal of the court ruling against Ordinance No. 13-121 regarding GMO and related
pesticides use. I believe the court properly found that the County should not prohibit legal commercial activity
in compliance with state and federal law. Instead, the County should ensure that current state and federal laws
and regulations for the safe management of pesticides are enforced.
Additional concerns about the adequacy of these regulations by some citizens of Hawaii County should be
brought to state and federal environmental authorities for action. However, I believe there is no current
compelling evidence for additional regulation, much less prohibition, of GMOs. Nevertheless, I support
continued investigation of the safety of GMO, as should be the case for all agricultural practices, and regulation
as necessary and effective.
The issue has become overly fraught with emotion. I recommend the following references:
