Subject: SUPPORT Reso 22-14 Testimony
Dear Council Members,
Please do the right thing for the people of the Big Island, for the farmers of the Big Island, and appeal this very poor
decision by this judge. The Big Island is an amazing and special place. We had a farm on the Kona side for several years.
Our friends had an organic papaya farm. Their farm was contaminated by GMO papaya and they lost their certification,
couldn't survive the loss and ended up having to close their farm down. There are so many organic farms on the big
island. They are growing their communities with good food and farmer's markets where folks can come together; they
are supporting their local economies and helping to keep the small towns alive; they are providing community building
agri-culture - true agriculture!
GMO seeds haven't been tested enough; indeed, they've barely been tested at all. Yet their impact on the environment
could have huge ramifications if something goes wrong. There is a reason so many other developed countries have
taken great caution with GMO seeds. They know that we don't know enough.
Hawaii has a unique and special environment and it is very susceptible to invasion and harm. This special paradise
deserves our every caution and protection. Please, please, do the right thing and appeal this judge's decision. You all
have been chosen to care for and protect this island. We live in Oahu now and, after living here, we see how special the
neighbor islands are. Honolulu and the "state" government doesn't guard and protect the neighbor islands. There is no
other jurisdiction where a municipal level GMO related ordinance has been struck down based on State preemption.
When local people care for the land, when they love the land, their voice should have the say on what happens with the
land. The people voted. Please protect their rights and the rights of their property and their beloved homes. You are the
guardians. Please appeal.
