Aloha Hawaii County Council members,
PLEASE SUPPORT RESO 22-14 to keep the ban on GMO crops.
GMO's are certainly controversial. Because there is emerging scientific data to at least support the investigation
of GMO's link to certain diseases, it warrants our due diligence to protect our citizens and our environment.
Did you know that 64 countries world-wide have GMO labeling laws?

There are states in the US fighting for GMO labeling now.
Did you know that Hawaii papayas are banned in many countries because of the non-GMO
labeling? Papaya exports have declined in the past 10 years. (See "National Agricultural Statistics Service,
2012). The concern for farmers is real. What if there were subsidies to help Hawaii GMO farmers transition to
sustainable organic farming?
Did you know that organic and non -CMO health foods and products was a $400B industry in 2012 and
will double to S800B by next year, 2015? (See "Packaged Facts" an independent market research
company.) Isn't this the growth market we want to be in?
Large corporations such as Monsanto and DuPont have a commitment to their bottom line profits. I seriously
doubt there is any concern for citizen health or concern for the environment.
We trust your concern is for the people of Hawaii and the aina.

64 Countires:
Countries increasingly have teamed together to adopt GE labeling laws across borders to improve access to
foreign markets. Between the last version of the map in 2005 and today, 24 additional countries have passed
mandatory labeling laws, and many more countries have worked to formalize and strengthen their regulatory
regimes.
India was the most recent country to adopt a mandatory labeling law at the beginning of 2013. Some countries
have no need for a labeling law because they do not allow any GE food, such as Zambia, Benin and Serbia,
which all have total bans on GE imports and cultivation. Turkey is now debating becoming the first country to
label GE animal products- meat, milk, eggs, cheese and other products - from animals raised on GE feed.
