Subject: In support of ban on GMO-appeal of ruling
dear council members,
I strongly support the council's ban on GMO for our island (County Ordinance 13-121).
Ordinance 13-121 was passed by Hawaii County Council in 2013 to protect Hawaii
Island's biodiversity, environmental quality and local food system by banning the future
cultivation of genetically engineered (GE) crops in the County.
I have big concerns regarding pesticides in our food and on our land. also the drift of GMO
to nearby farms. I no longer use some Island products that I "suspect" are GMO like dairy
and papaya. If you don't want GMO foods all we can do as consumers is buy certified
organic and that means mainland foods. I'd like to support local farmers but not if it
threatens my health.
