Subject: Communication 9.1
As a permanent, year -round resident and property owner on the Island of
Hawaii, I strongly support the concept established in recently approved
county legislation in banning genetically modified agriculture with
specified exceptions (Bill 133). Home rule is important and an important
aspect of our County's governance.
I strongly urge you, our County Council, to approve the appointment of
both Paul Achitoff, Earth Justice, and George Kimbrell, Center for Food
Safety, to act on the County's behalf in the appeal of the lower court's
recent decision giving the state control of this issue on our island. These
two bring a strong understanding beyond the scope of what our local
attorneys have simply based on the breadth and depth of their valuable
experience in the courtroom regarding the issue at hand.
Mahalo for your consideration and comprehension of this request and the
implications at stake in the matter of the appeal.
