Subject: Home Rule VS "rule from the Big City' and their rich 1 percenters
Dear Council Members
I cannot attend the Feb. 4th meeting to decide whether or not to hire outside
council to challenge Judge Kurren's decision to invalidate ordinance 13-121 (the
GMO crop ordinance), so I would like to put my'two cents' in. I am directing this
letter especially to Danny Paleka, my council member.
I do not want the Big Island to become what Oahu has become... polluted by farm
chemicals (because back then we 'did not know' they would pollute our Aina and
ground water). Well we know now, that it did cause dangerous and expensive to
clean up, pollution, (that us taxpayers have to pay to clean up!!!!) and so we as a
people have the duty to say "NO" to untested and unproven chemicals and
organisms (especially GMO's) that may do harm to our Island. 1 live here and I have
the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"...A God given right. I don't
believe God gave the right to pollute and harm our Aina. These GMO advocates
come mostly from the mainland... they don't live here. My job as a father is to
protect my children and family and the Aina and the community that further
supports and 'nourishes' them, if properly cared for. This is also Hawaiian tradition
and this is Hawa!'i, not the mainland, so here the Aina come before profit or
expedience.
Like DDT, which was proclaimed by the chemical corporations as'safe', so safe,
that children used to chase the DDT spray trucks and play and bathe in the
residue. Well we know how that turned out. Fool us once ... your bad. Fool us
again .... our bad. I believe in 'playing it safe', especially where my family and the
Aina are concerned. We have a duty as Hawaiian citizens to first protect the Aina. I
hope Danny Paleka and all the council members will vote to defend this hard won
GMO ban. Thank You for your attention.
