Resolution 74-15 Council Member Daniel Pakeka, Jr.
Resolution 60-15 Council Chair Dru Kanuha
Aloha Council Chair Kanuha and Council Members, and a special aloha to my "=
L
Council Member, Fresh Onishi.
I am Mele Spencer and a member and Treasurer, on Hawaii Island Committee on
Status of Women and a member of the Hawaii Island Women's Leadership
Forum, Planning Committee. I am also the Lt. Governor for the five western U.S.
states of Zonta International, a global organization of professionals empowering
women worldwide through service and advocacy. And because of my affiliations
I am please to be here to testify "for" Resolutions 66-15, 74-15 and 60-15.
Funding of the Hawaii Island Women's Leadership Summit, through
these resolutions and previous resolutions and the many individuals,
organizations and businesses, will allow us to start a new era for Hawaii Island
women. It is the first Women's Leadership Summit in Hawaii County and in
addition to the reasons stated in the Hawai'i Island Women's Leadership Forum
letter, will provide opportunities that until now have never been available to most
women on this island. This Summit provides individual and leadership
development and encourages esteem building for women to make good choices
for themselves, families and communities. It is a pro -active way to provide
women with good choices skills and hopefully the ability to avoid those
destructive domestic and family issues all of us try so hard to address.
For all these reasons, I support these resolutions of support. On behalf of Hazel
Beck, our Chair for the Hawai'i County Committee on Status of Women and the
Committee, our gratitude for your wisdom and support of women on our island.
Mahalo nui loa!
