This is because of the low mortality and high quality of Hawaii aquarium fish. Current practices result in live and healthy fish. • It is well documented that feeding live fish before transport is not recommended. Short term removal of food is a common practice for the health of fish. A reasonable length of fasting does not result in mortality for fish or for that matter pets. • Requiring one gallon of water per fish is not a recommendation I have seen in 20 years of packing live fish. This recommendation appears to be based on dilution of waste, but waste varies in toxicity and volume depending on the size of the fish and species. For a novice that ships a few fish now and again perhaps this would provide benefit. Frequently novices substitute either lots of water or oxygen for lack of expertise. For a professional exporter those factors in many variables this will provide no benefit and will create an unnecessary financial burden. • Please consider the written information from Ms. Munday that indicates 100 % live arrival and the subsequent longevity of the Yellow Tang she imported from Hawaii for her research project. It is clearly Hawaii fish not fish from other countries who may not be known for their quality. There is no way to distort the fact that the fish all arrived alive and are alive some years later. The requirements of Bill 318 are critically flawed, without basis, and will not achieve the purported goals of the Bill.
