The club and school staff members are also working to use the garden project as a means to strengthen the community by inviting the people into the garden to work with the staff and youth. Composting will be a vital program as we learn to produce healthy soil through various methods of composting. The Hamakua Club Director brought Hawaii County Civil Defense to the Club to do a presentation on community preparedness to teach us how we can work together to be resilient should a disaster strike. This school garden project offers an opportunity for the youth involved to continue to develop that mindset of self-reliance and community building, while acquiring STEM knowledge and concepts and practical life skills.
