HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0118.062 2014-2016Anthony Nahacky against Bill 024 - Aquarium Fisherman Feb. 10, 2015
Aloha,
I am a Hawaii County registered voter and have been collecting and exporting aquarium fish in Hawaii since
1967.
My understanding is that the fish of Hawaii belong to the State and are to be managed by the State. Even if
this is incorrect currently the fact is that the State manages all fisheries. This Bill is an effort to close the fishery
in Hawaii County yet the county has not been regulating or monitoring the aquarium fisheries. In addition
being as this Bill was introduced at least one member of the council is not willing to accept the States data or
recommendations. Before closing this fishery with impossible regulations and inflicting economic hardship on
Hawaii county residents that benefit from the fishery, should not Hawaii DLNR/bAR data be utilized? Does the
council actually believe the State's data is incorrect when it is considered around the world as being a model
of management and monitoring? Not long ago I saw on TV, families on a long weekend visiting Sea Life Park
with protestors against the park outside. Is this the trend to bury a business activity with requirements simply
as someone else dislikes it? The aquarium fishery on the Big Island is well managed by the State and every five
years recommendations are made to improve the sustainability of the fisheries. This Bill is being submitted to
close a sustainable fishery as some do not like it, so I ask that this Bill not be passed and that the States data
and recommendations be considered non bias, factual, science based as they are.
Thank you, Anthony Nahacky
