TO: Hawai'i County Council — Resolution 106-15
On behalf of the 295 students and families of Waimea Middle School, and also our faculty and
staff, we write to convey our support for Resolution 106-15 and to thank the Hawaii County
Council and Hawaii County Police Department for pursuing a COPS Grant from the U.S.
Department of Justice to fund a School Resource Officer to be based at Waimea Middle School.
We are a public conversion charter school that serves "all public middle school students' in this
community, and we recently received 6 -year Accreditation from the Western Association of
Schools and Colleges. One of the reasons the Visiting Committee recommended full 5 -year
Accreditation was our school's comprehensive positive behavior program that provides a full range
of student -centered supports to achieve our mission of empowering "all students with the skills,
values, and cultural understanding to successfully navigate high school and beyond."
This includes introducing all students to our I KAIR Core Values ('Ike, Kaizen, Accountability,
Integrity and Respect) and also our schoolwide "Behaviors For Learning." We believe a School
Resource Officer will support both our values and positive behavior strategies in meaningful ways
that help students make good choices in school and life.
We look forward to working with the Police Department on implementing this program.
With gratitude and aloha,
Amy dd., Interim Principal
