As a small businessperson I find this bill to not only be restrictive but regressive. I completely agree that the beauty of our community is important. The beauty of the community will be meaningless however, if we have no community. I am a Realtor. My full time job is to sell real estate. My fiduciary to my clients, your constituents, is to make sure the general public is aware of the availability of the properties for sale. I am tasked to use all legal means to do this. I have sold real estate for almost 20 years, 15 of those years were almost exclusively on Oahu. When I moved to Hilo five years ago and started my practice here I was surprised that so many more people called because of a real estate sign. On Oahu most people came to a property through their real estate agent. Here in East Hawaii we appear to be a more "independent population" making the exposure a real estate for sale sign that much more important in my mind. In a recent study of the National Association of Realtors published in the January/February 1999 issue of Real Estate Business they found that real estate signs were the number one technique utilized in attracting buyers. Not only are real estate sales persons negatively impacted but I can't understand what we would be accomplishing by limited the size of a businesses name in their store front window. That window costs a lot of money. Usually the amount of storefront you have is directly linked to the amount of rent you pay for that space. I hope we are able to work together for the benefit of the visual beauty of our community as well as the economic beauty. Thank you for the opportunity to testify in opposition to Bill 280.
