Subject: Request for Sign Variance
Dear Sir:
The developers of Kohanaiki Business Park, Kamaaina Eight Partners LLC,
requests a variance for their subdivision sign:rge from the standards set forth in Chapter 3
of the Hawaii County Code. This request for variance is being made on Section 3-25 to
allow for more tkran one sign to front onto any street and on Section 3-30 to allow for a
sign larger than eight square feet.
The Kohanaiki Business Park (TiVIIC: 7-3-09-IS) fronts Queen Ka'ahumanu
Highway which has a posted 45 mph speed limit. Project signage along this highway needs
to be oriented towazds approaching velucles and sized large enough to allow people an
opportunity to read it while traveling at a luglr rate of speed. The signage for this project
proposes to mount cut-out letters spelling out the name, "KOHANAIKI" onto the faces of
two-four foot high rock walls located one each on either side of the enhy road. These
signage walls will be oriented such that one would face southward onto Queen
Ka'alrumanu Highway and the other would face northward. Both these signage walls are
integrated into the landscaping that is planned for the entire project frontage.
The hidividual letters for the signs will be of white Corian eleven inches in height.
The aggregate area of all the letters in the narnc "KOFIANAIKI" totals 6.8 square feet.
The combined signage area for both signs will be 13.6 square feet.
Attached are landscape plans shorting the sigrrage wall locations and elevations of
the signs.
Sincer y, )
