SUBJECT: County Funding for Non-profit Organizations
In difficult economic times, human service non-profit agencies are doubly
affected. The needs of the citizenry for service increases and the funding
sources propose decreases. It is tempting to lower or eliminate funding for the
non-profit organizations, but I urge you to balance your budget some other way.
County funding is efficiently used by the non-profit organizations to provide an
array of services to some of the most vulnerable of our citizens. The problems
will not go away by not funding the nonprofits. I suspect that county agencies will
be called upon to serve these citizens and will needed additional funding.
I urge you, at a minimum, to maintain your commitment to the non-profit sector.
An expansion of that commitment in real dollars can produce greater efficiencies
in the provision of services.
