Dear Mr. Arakaki and All Council Members:
I heard that you were considering cutting the funding for
the County Band. I work at Kealakehe Intermediate, I work
with Mr. Ventimiglia, the band conductor for the West
Hawaii County Band. I see a tremendous outpouring of time,
energy and concern Mr. V. puts out on a daily basis to
promote music on our Big Island. He has included children
from the age of 6 in concert (school) and has probably
been the single most inspiration for both of my children
playing music. They both play 2 instruments because of his
program. This all began from a parade that West Hawaii
Band did down in Naalehu. Mr.V. has been instrumental in
the development of many childrens music education..The
question is where do they go after/during High School to
prepare themselves for a career in Music? Hawaii culture
is one of oral tradition and music. A co teacher and i
asked each other, "Why is there no music program for the
elementary children of Hawaii? Music is recognized as
being a key to the success of students in math, there is a
strong correlation between the two. We are considering
moving from Hawaii to a rural community in California
because of the lack of Music opportunities for our
children.No music camps, no youth orchestras, no
opportunities for our children to perform and be
recognized. In deciding the budget, please consider the
County Band as being an important program that
enlivens,nurtures and helps define our culture here in
Hawaii.
