Program March 18, 1999 Enclosed please find 34 letters written by 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students of Hualalai Academy regarding their hopes that the DA.R.E. program will continue. The 4th graders would like to participate in the p next year when they are 5th graders. Some of them know of the program from siblings who have been taught it. Our 5th and 6th graders are graduates of the program, and they all consider the lessons they were taught to have been of value to them in making decisions about their futures and the choices they will be face with. The D.A.R.E. program started at our school about twelve years ago. Officer Daryl Picadura has taught the course for many of those years, and I have seen him present a course that has changed with the times and has addressed issues, choices, and consequences that children will have to face in life in ways that any school's academic curriculum cannot. Having a uniformed police officer in the classroom has an uinpact on the children. It makes them think about how they view police officers and the law. It makes the children think about how they, as citizens, relate to the police and the laws that govern us all. It teaches the children about the real dangers that drugs present, and the very real consequences that can follow their use. The D AR. E. program is not time or money wasted. 110, RECEIVED "r - rime----------- -- 8 ...... ------------- County Council i c,=, No. 1#77 Ito File No. ey D Ref.
